What Dancers Taught Me About Rhythm

Ballroom dancers rehearsing while a pianist plays

Designing music for ballroom dancers at Arthur Murray Boston, and later at Champion Dance Sport in Everett, changed how I hear a bar. Dancers need a pulse they can trust, and a phrase that tells them when to turn.

I started leaving more air around the beat, and I started teaching that way too. Rhythm is not only counted. It is balanced, and it has to be felt in the body before it is reliable in the hands.
